Genaro Resendiz's blog ::The QB Conundrum: Josh Johnson

As               this               year's               young               crop               of               quarterbacks,               Matthew               Stafford,               Mark               Sanchez,               Josh               Freeman               and               others,               set               out               to               begin               their               NFL               careers,               I               offer               this               unsolicited               advice.

First,               you've               all               had               good               college               careers,               but               your               not               in               Kansas               anymore,               or               Georgia,               or               California               for               that               matter.

You               might               be               drafted               in               the               first               round,               and               even               be               the               first               pick,               but               there               are               a               history               of               former               1st               round,               even               1st               pick               busts,               see               Tim               Couch,               Ryan               Leaf,               Akili               Smith,               Rick               Mirer               and               several               others.

This               is               an               exciting               time,               your               starting               your               professional               football               career,               you're               a               millionaire               over               night               in               a               time               when               many               people               are               struggling,               so               show               appreciation               and               humility.

Cherish               this               time               and               take               advantage               of               your               opportunity.

Don't               hold               out,               sign               your               rich               contract               and               start               your               NFL               career.

Holding               out               alienates               your               new               teammates               and               hampers               your               first               year               growth.
During               your               rookie               year,               listen               more               then               you               talk.

Work               hard,               study,               and               gain               the               trust               and               respect               of               your               team.

I'd               also               be               extra               nice               to               the               offensive               lineman,               maybe               bring               some               gifts               for               the               big               guys               on               the               first               day,               sort               of               like               the               days               when               you               brought               your               teacher               a               shinny               apple.

Take               care               of               your               line,               they               are               the               key               to               your               success,               just               ask               David               Carr.
Finally,               we've               become               a               society               of               instant               gratification.

We               rate               our               President               on               his               first               100               days               on               the               job.

Many               of               us               are               in               credit               card               debt,               because               we               no               longer               save               for               things.

So,               when               the               media               begins               to               grade               you               based               on               your               mini               camp               and               preseason               performance,               and               even               when               you               eventually               gain               the               starting               job,               don't               become               what               you               read               or               hear.

NFL               careers               are               not               usually               made               or               broken               in               one               season.
So,               when               your               name               is               called               and               you               approach               the               podium               and               shake               commissioner               Goodell's               hand,               put               the               cap               on               and               hold               up               your               jersey,               and               try               not               to               get               blinded               by               the               light.

Smile               big,               because               you've               made               it,               you're               in               the               NFL.

Now,               the               question               is,               will               you               be               able               to               stay               here.
