Genaro Resendiz's blog ::Buccaneers vs. Vikings: Doug Martin Outshines Adrian Peterson in Bucs Win
As a Minnesota Vikings fan, I am much more excited about my team, a team with a 3-13 record last season, than I thought I'd be. Maybe it's because the Vikings are no longer threats to move. With a new stadium approved and set to open in 2016, generations of fans are assured their favorite team will remain in Minnesota. My expectations aren't that high for this year's squad. I expect better than last year, but I'm a realist about the team's very slim chances of making the playoffs. Maybe because nobody expects the team to do well, we will all get a pleasant surprise come January. Whether they post double-digits in victories or not, it's comforting to know the Vikings will be around to break our hearts for years to come. Here is one fan's look at the Vikings chances this season: Week One: Jacksonville Compared to the Jaguars, the Vikings look downright stable. A new coach, a young quarterback and a defense that is mediocre at best is a great opener for the Vikes. Expect the crowd to be jacked up and the team to deliver, even if Adrian Peterson doesn't play. Win. Week Two: at Indianapolis: The NFL schedule makers were very kind to the re-building Vikings by putting their two worst opponents in the first two weeks of the season. The Colts are going to need much more than Andrew Luck to change their fortunes. The kid will be good one day, but it won't be enough to beat the Vikings in the second week of the season. Week Three: San Francisco The 49ers were within minutes of beating the Giants and making it to last season's big game. The 49ers have re-tooled their lineup and given quarterback Alex Smith more talent at wide receiver, including former Vikings malcontent Randy Moss. The Niners defense is too good to let Christian Ponder light them up. The Niners leave town with a victory. Loss. Week Four: at Detroit The Lions made the playoffs last season and expect to get back there again in 2012. While the Lions are one of the better young teams in the league, they need to be careful to not get over confident. Despite this, the Vikings are no match for the Lions, especially at Ford Field. Loss. Week Five: Tennessee This is one of those games the Vikings will need to win if they want to improve vastly from a season ago. However, the Titans have too many weapons on offense and their defense is above average. I wouldn't be shocked to a see a Vikings win, but I won't hold my breath. Loss. Week Six: at Washington The Redskins were one of just three teams the Vikings beat in 2011. But the Skins are getting better and by week six rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III should be comfortable enough to get his team a win at home over Minnesota. Loss. Week Seven: Arizona The Vikings kick off a two-game home stand with another team they beat last year. The Cardinals are a mess at quarterback and their offensive line is going to have its hands full with Jared Allen and company. This is a game the Vikings should win and probably will. Win. Week Eight: Tampa Bay The Vikings get a short week to prep for the Buccaneers, a team that shocked the Vikes early last season. Unless the Bucs start the season with a surprise hot streak, this is another game the Vikings should win. Win Week Nine: at Seattle The second half of the season starts in the Pacific Northwest, a place the Vikings have struggled in year's past. Seattle is a better team than last year's record would indicate. My guess is that new quarterback Matt Flynn will have the Seahawks around the .500 mark by this game. The Vikings will need a top effort to win here. Loss. Week 10: Detroit The Vikings get the Lions out of the way before playing any other division opponent. If recent history is any type of indicator, the Lions should be decimated by injuries by the this point in the season. While the Lions are a better team, it is hard to beat a divisional rival on the road. Win. Week 11: Bye Week 12: at Chicago After the bye week the Vikings play three straight division games, starting with a pair on the road. The Bears should be better than they were a season ago, but like the Lions they are hard to gauge. I'll take the Bears at home. Loss. Week 13: at Green Bay The Vikings start December by visiting Lambeau Field. The Packers have been the class of the NFC for almost two seasons, and it's hard to imagine them not being a title contender again. The Vikes will fight like they always do in Wisconsin, but they have no chance to win. Loss. Week 14: Bears This is a good matchup for Minnesota. They will be familiar with the Bears and should be able to learn from past mistakes. Divisional games are won by the home team 73 percent of the time over the past five seasons. I'll take the Vikes. Win. Week 15: at St. Louis The Rams will either be in the thick of the division title hunt or they will be so plagued by injuries they will be counting the days until the season concludes. My gut says the Vikings will win this one. Win. Week 16: at Houston The Texans were one of the best teams In the AFC last season and I don't see them getting any worse. If Matt Schaub is still under center by this time in the season, the Texans should have their way with the Purple. Loss Week 17: Green Bay The season concludes with the Vikings hosting the Packers. Odds are Green Bay will be already in the playoffs, so don't expect to see all of the Packers stars. The Vikings win this one, simply because the Packers won't need to. Win. Based on these musings the Vikings will go 7-9. Not great, but a nice improvement from 2011. Blair Reynolds is a freelance writer and lifelong Minnesota Vikings fan. |
