Genaro Resendiz's blog ::Classy move by the Tampa Bay Bucs; recognizing the dignity of Eric LeGrand

Football               is               a               sport               where               performance               on               the               field               can               quickly               be               trumped               by               health               away               from               the               gridiron.

Fans               at               Raymond               James               Stadium               witnessed               such               a               moment               on               Sunday,               November               11,               when               linebacker               Quincy               Black               of               the               Tampa               Bay               Buccaneers               was               carted               off               the               field               following               a               head-to-head               collision.

The               6th               year               player               was               attempting               to               tackle               San               Diego               Chargers'               running               back               Ryan               Matthews               during               a               34-24               triumph               by               the               Bucs.

Though               the               ball               carrier's               progress               was               stopped,               Black               fell               to               the               turf               following               contact               between               the               helmets.
These               are               among               the               most               sobering               moments               in               the               NFL,               as               football               has               seen               several               players               lose               mobility               over               the               years               due               to               spinal               cord               injuries.

Black               was               carted               off               the               field               and               even               gave               a               "thumb-up"               salute               as               he               exited               the               stadium.
However,               the               prognosis               has               not               gone               flawlessly               for               the               well-liked               University               of               New               Mexico               product.

On               Tuesday,               Tampa               Bay               placed               Black               on               season-ending               injured               reserve               due               to               a               neck               injury,               which               continues               to               affect               his               functioning.
Though               fortunately               not               limiting               overall               mobility,               medical               sources               have               indicated               the               wound               must               be               treated               as               a               significant               one.

Paralysis               is               not               the               only               danger,               as               Black               continues               to               have               trouble               with               normal               functioning               of               his               left               arm,               despite               walking               out               of               the               hospital               the               following               day.
The               Bucs               have               offered               positive               spin               on               Black's               progress,               despite               sidelining               him               for               the               remainder               of               2012.

When               the               swelling               subsides,               the               linebacker               will               undergo               additional               testing               to               determine               if               there               is               nerve               damage.

Though               Coach               Greg               Schiano               described               the               toughness               of               the               player               during               his               weekly               press               conference,               the               injury               could               certainly               limit               his               career,               if               normal               functioning               of               the               arm               is               hampered.
Seeing               a               player               carted               away               surely               struck               a               tender               chord               for               Schiano.

While               coaching               Rutgers               University               in               2010,               the               Bucs'               leader               witnessed               defensive               lineman               Eric               LeGrand               fall               to               the               field               following               a               tackle               in               MetLife               Stadium               against               the               Army               Black               Knights.
LeGrand               would               similarly               leave               on               a               stretcher,               but               his               injury               proved               far               worse.

The               college               student               was               paralyzed               below               the               neck               due               to               a               fracture               to               his               cervical               vertebrae.
LeGrand's               career               ended,               but               he               proceeded               to               get               his               life               on               track               and               even               signed               a               1               day               contract               with               Schiano's               Buccaneers               earlier               this               year.

The               22               year-old               has               written               a               book               on               his               experiences               and               Tampa               Bay               has               obviously               derived               motivation               from               the               courageous               struggle               to               overcome               his               disability.
Such               injuries               are               always               feared               in               a               sport               characterized               by               hard               contact.

For               that               reason,               fans               must               be               grateful               that               Black's               symptoms               are               not               worse.
Nevertheless,               the               loss               of               his               services               will               be               missed.

The               Bucs'               linebacker               corps               has               greatly               improved               in               2012               with               the               addition               of               rookie               tackling-sensation               Lavonte               David.

Despite               only               starting               5               games,               the               6               year               veteran               is               one               of               the               more               experienced               players               on               the               squad.

He               additionally               contributes               to               special               team               and               his               knowledge               is               undoubtedly               beneficial               to               surrounding               young               players.
Prior               to               the               injury,               Black               posted               a               season-high               6               tackles               against               the               Chargers.

He               accumulated               35               total               wrap-ups               during               9               games               of               the               2012               season,               with               a               fumble               recovery               on               special               teams.
The               loss               of               Black               likely               grants               additional               playing               time               to               reserves               Adam               Hayward               and               Dekoda               Watson.

Each               player               has               spent               his               entire               career               with               the               Bucs               and               it               is               hoped               that               the               combination               can               handle               increased               responsibilities               within               Schiano's               system.
Fans               at               Raymond               James               Stadium               obviously               hope               to               see               Quincy               Black               playing               again.

Yet,               his               long-term               health               away               from               the               gridiron               remains               everyone's               priority.
