Genaro Resendiz's blog ::Tampa Bay Lightning Hockey N Heels
As a die-hard hockey fan born and raised here in Connecticut from the Hartford Whalers to the Hartford Wolf Pack and Connecticut Whale and back again to the Hartford Wolf Pack and so on, at least some talk around my neck of Willimantic, Connecticut this year has been focused on Connecticut-born, Los Angeles Kings goalie sensation, Jonathan Quick. He's a Milford-born lad who saw his team capture the coveted Stanley Cup with the Kings last year and is now facing a equally talented and tough Chicago Blackhawks team in the Western Conference Finals here in 2013-- a Blackhawks team coached incidentally by former Hartford Whalers player, Joel Quenville. This Connecticut presence in this year's NHL playoffs had got me thinking, just how many Connecticut-born NHL players have there been in NHL history? Just what sort of breeding ground for hockey is there in Connecticut? A quick trip to www.hockey-reference.com led me to some very fascinating answers and some fairly familiar names. Here are just a few of the 28 Connecticut-born players listed : Familiar Connecticut-Born NHL Standouts: Eric Boguniecki, Center, born in New Haven, CT. played for the Saint Louis Blues primarily, but also had a more local connection, playing for the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers back in 2006-2007. In the NHL, Eric Boguniecki amassed 34 goals and 42 assists for 76 points. On the Sound Tigers, he amassed a total of 22 goals and 32 assists for 54 points. Greg Brown, Defense, born in Hartford, CT. played 94 NHL games for the likes of the Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburg Penguins, and Winnipeg Jets. He scored 4 goals and 14 assists for 18 points total. Chris Clark, Right Wing, born in South Windsor, CT. earned 103 goals and 111 assists in 607 NHL games playing for the likes of the Calgary Flames, Washington Capitals, and Columbus Blue Jackets. Recently he had a 6-game stint with the Providence Bruins of the AHL in 2011-2012. Obviously many of my generation of Connecticut hockey fans nowadays know or can recall of Chris Drury of Trumbull, CT. Chris Drury's claim to fame is his impressive resume with the Colorado Avalanche in his early years where in 2000-2001 he added his name to the Stanley Cup in just his 3rd year in the NHL. This followed by a year with the Calgary Flames and four years with the Buffalo Sabres before finishing out his latter career with the New York Rangers. Then there is of course the Boston Bruins' 1st round draft pick, 13th overall in 1986, Craig Janney of Hartford, CT. who in 760 NHL games scored 188 goals and added 563 assists for 751 points. Craig Janney has seen much of the NHL landscape having played for the Boston Bruins, St. Louis Blues, San Jose Sharks, Winnipeg Jets, Phoenix Coyotes, Tampa Bay Lightning, and finally the New York Islanders before retiring in 1999. Of the most interesting names I have come across of the 28 Connecticut-born hockey jocks to make it to the NHL, two names came up in particular that offer a glimpse into some of Connecticut's early hockey roots. Players of Connecticut Hockey Past: Frank Beisler, Defense, born October 18th, 1913 from New Haven, CT. played only 2 NHL games. One game in the then New York Americans 1936-1937 season and another game in 1939-1940, also for the New York Americans. As a minor league player though, Frank Beisler saw action for the International-American Hockey League's New Haven Eagles from 1934-1938, and also played for the Springfield Indians when the current American Hockey League was officially founded--New Haven, CT. and Springfield, Mass. both being two founding franchises of the league that now boasts 30 active teams, including two from Connecticut.. Beisler played for the Springfield Indians from 1938-1942 before a term with the AHL's Buffalo Bison until 1946. In his 5 seasons with the AHL, Beisler scored 8 goals and 28 assists in 182 AHL games. He also amassed 123 penalty minutes as well. Frank Beisler passed away on September 8th, 1973 at the age of 54. Moe Roberts, Goalie, born December 13th, 1905 from Waterbury, CT. played 10 NHL games for the Boston Bruins, New York Americans, and Chicago Blackhawks. In 10 NHL games, Moe Roberts earned only 3 wins and 5 losses and a 3.71 goals-against average. However, he was probably more appreciated as a member of the Canadian-American League, while playing for the New Haven Eagles from 1926-1928 and 1931-1933. In his 7 years with the Can-Am league he played a total of 258 games in net and earned himself 106 wins, 128 losses, and saw only 24 games go into a tie or overtime. He allowed 629 goals against in his Can-Am League tenure and had a 2.37 goals against average along with his 22 career shutouts. Moe Roberts passed away on February 5th, 1975 at the age of 69.
