Genaro Resendiz's blog ::Mike Freeman's 15 Big-Time NFL Predictions Sure to Go Right

If               the               quarterback               of               your               favorite               football               team               just               broken               the               franchise               record               for               touchdown               passes               and               passing               yards               in               a               season,               chances               are               you               would               be               pretty               pleased               with               the               direction               your               team               was               heading.
However,               for               Josh               Freeman               and               Tampa               Bay               Buccaneers               fans,               that               is               not               necessarily               the               case               as               the               book               closes               on               the               2012               season.
Freeman               was               drafted               17th               overall               in               the               2009               draft,               though               he               was               admittedly               viewed               as               a               very               raw               prospect.

He               could               easily               throw               the               ball               60               yards               in               the               air,               but               his               decision               making               abilities               and               accuracy               were               questionable.
Flash               forward               to               2013,               and               statistically,               Josh               Freeman               just               finished               the               best               season               any               Buccaneer               quarterback               has               ever               had,               throwing               for               4,065               yards               with               27               touchdown               passes.

You               would               think               Bucs               fans               would               be               thrilled.
Unfortunately,               Freeman               also               threw               17               interceptions               and               only               completed               54.8%               of               his               passes;               nine               of               those               interceptions               came               in               the               team's               final               three               games.

Clearly               there               is               still               some               cause               for               concern,               and               the               fan               base               is               not               sold               on               Freeman               as               a               savior.
So               who               is               the               real               Josh               Freeman?

Can               he               be               a               franchise               quarterback?

The               truth               probably               lies               somewhere               in               the               middle.
Freeman               was               playing               at               a               very               high-and               probably               unsustainable-level               during               the               middle               of               the               season.

In               four               straight               games,               he               had               three               touchdown               passes               and               a               quarterback               rating               of               over               100.

Yet               Freeman's               last               three               games               were               the               complete               opposite               as               he               easily               played               the               worst               football               of               the               season.
Many               of               the               problems               can               be               traced               back               to               his               offensive               line,               where               only               one               of               the               five               starters               from               the               fall               made               it               through               the               entire               season               without               an               injury               or               a               change               of               position.

The               team               lost               not               only               Pro               Bowl               guard               Davin               Joseph               to               a               season-ending               injury               before               the               season               even               started,               but               their               other               Pro               Bowl               guard,               Carl               Nicks,               for               half               of               the               season               as               well.
The               loss               of               the               dominant               running               game               also               hurt               Freeman's               productivity               late               in               the               season.

Rookie               sensation               Doug               Martin               was               averaging               nearly               five               yards               per               carry               before               the               offensive               line               suffered               all               the               setbacks,               causing               his               YPC               drop               to               3.7.
Tampa               also               featured               the               worst               pass               defense               in               the               NFL               this               season.

As               good               as               the               offense               could               be               at               times,               the               defense               could               not               stop               anything               resulting               in               a               handful               of               shootouts.

Higher               scoring               games               and               more               pass               attempts               leave               room               for               more               mistakes               and               interceptions.
Although               Freeman's               accuracy               has               always               been               a               point               of               contention               among               fans               and               analysts,               he               will               never               be               as               accurate               as               Drew               Brees.

Yet               Freeman               does               excel               at               throwing               the               deep               ball,               and               the               Buccaneers               led               the               league               this               year               on               completion               percentage               of               throws               20+               yards.

Although               Freeman               struggles               on               the               more               intermediate               throws,               no               one               in               the               NFL               was               better               at               throwing               deep.
Some               fans               have               been               clamoring               for               a               change               at               quarterback               in               the               coming               year               or               two               due               to               Freeman's               inadequacies.

While               the               truth               remains               that               he               may               not               be               a               top               ten               quarterback,               he               is               better               than               any               other               prospect               in               the               upcoming               NFL               Draft               and               free               agent               pool.

Of               course,               there               should               be               some               trepidation               about               extending               Freeman;               his               rookie               contract               is               set               to               expire               at               the               end               of               next               season,               and               he               still               has               not               led               the               team               to               playoffs.
Josh               Freeman               deserves               at               least               one               more               year               to               show               what               he               can               do               with               a               healthy               (and               expensive)               offensive               line               protecting               him.

Fans               should               be               excited               about               these               offensive               playmakers               and               the               fact               that,               at               first               glance,               the               2013               schedule               appears               favorable               for               the               Buccaneers.
Did               you               ever               expect               to               live               in               a               world               where               the               Tampa               Bay               Buccaneers               would               have               the               ninth               ranked               offense               in               the               entire               NFL?

Anything               is               possible.
